Horse Chestnut | Aesculus hippocastanum
Spiky cases, gleaming seeds, celebrated by children. Horse chestnuts, with their mahogany-bright conkers, are the very essence of autumn.
Aesculus hippocastanum or Common Horse Chestnut is a large deciduous tree with an upright-rounded canopy of large, dark-green leaves that will turn red-brown early in autumn.
Creamy-white flowers with a pink flush create a pretty display in late spring. The flowers give way to large, spiny capsules that contain 1-2 horse chestnuts.
